Cross-border portability: citizens will enjoy wider access to online content across the EU

EU citizens will very soon benefit from wider access to online content across the EU, regardless of their Member State of residence and the Member States they are travelling to. This is one of the main achievements accomplished by the European Parliament, who reached an agreement today with the European Commission and Member States representatives on a new piece of legislation on cross-border portability of online content services. Thanks to this regulation, which will remove legal barriers to cross-border portability, EU citizens will be able listen to their music and watch their films legally acquired at home and anywhere else in Europe as long as their stay abroad is temporary.

Jean-Marie Cavada, European Parliament’s rapporteur, said: “This Regulation is a vital step towards the completion of the European single market. Thanks to this new legislation, once formally approved by the European Parliament and the Council, all EU citizens travelling for personal or professional reasons will enjoy access to the same online content both at home and abroad”.

“This legislation adapts to new technological developments, while addressing free movement of persons within Europe. It will also stimulate innovation for the benefit of consumers, service providers and rights holders”
