The EPP Group will today denounce Nicolas Maduro’s government for inspiring the unconstitutional actions of the Venezuelan Supreme Court and the Attorney General and urge that the Parliament (Asamblea Nacional) regain its powers and prerogatives as an independent legislative institution.
During an extraordinary debate convened in the plenary of the European Parliament on the alarming situation in Venezuela, Luis de Grandes MEP will call for „respect for the constitutional order and division of powers that must exist in any democracy”.
The EPP Group will also once again ask the Government led by Nicolás Maduro for the immediate release of all political prisoners, call for elections to the Presidency of the country and the establishment of measures to provide humanitarian assistance to the population.
De Grandes, EPP Group Coordinator for Eurolat, also denounces „the repression exercised over the last hours by the Venezuelan regime against the Venezuelan people, who legitimately protested the latest decisions by the government and the permanent lack of freedoms.”
Quoting the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, De Grandes says: „A parody of democracy is not democracy”.
„It is also the time for the EU to combine diplomacy with a stronger position so the Venezuelan people feel encouraged by the EU and regain hope of freedom,” De Grandes concludes.
