Ukraine: European Parliament grants visa waiving

The European Parliament has today approved the last file of a legislative package that will allow Ukrainian citizens to travel to the EU without a visa for stays of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period. The ALDE Group welcomes this decision, which will boost tourism, promote business and strengthen the ties between EU and Ukrainian citizens.

Petr Jezek, ALDE shadow rapporteur for the EU visa waiver agreement with Ukraine, said: “Ukraine fulfilled all the criteria for the visa-free travel of its citizens to the EU. That is perfectly sufficient for granting it”.

“Additionally, Ukraine was dragged into a difficult situation and deserves our support. Years ago, when Berlin was divided and was also in a very difficult situation, a great US president proudly declared himself a Berliner. The democratic world stood by Berlin, and by the principles of the liberal world. This ultimately united Berlin, Germany and Europe”.

“I see a similarity with the current situation in Ukraine. The people of Ukraine suffer and key principles of international relations and international law are also at stake”

„Nowadays, people wherever they may live, who want a peaceful world under the rule of international law, are, in a way, Ukrainians.

“I am proud the European Parliament, and all the European Union, are leading efforts to support and encourage the people of Ukraine. For their future. And ours as well.”
